So He's Officially Running - What do You Think of El Richardson's Chances?

5/21/07-  So what do you think.  He launched his campaign in California (might be a few Hispanics voters there....)

He acknowledges he's ot some work to do...speaking of other candidates- "I won't have their money, but I will have the voters and the grass-roots campaign."

And regardless of his chances, it is pleasant to see a Hispanic...reach the position of succesfully launching a run for the White House.

Actually there was one 30 years ago or so...in the Don Quixote mold...a businessman from California by the name of Ben Fernandez...running for the Republican nomination for President.

Fernandez if I recall correctly was from RedWood.  He founded NEDA, the National Economic Development  Agency (?)

Not sure where he made his original money, or how he came to found NEDA, but it was about the time of Nixon, Haldeman, Erlichman, and their Hispanic hangers-on, Tony Sanchez I think, and Henry Ramirez of the Hispanic Cabinet Committee....so NEDA's founding probably came from those fertile minds.

Anyhow Ben Fernandez seems to have faded into oblivion and should not be mentioned in the same breath as Governor Richardson with his track record of elected office, and service as United Nations Ambassador.  Just trying to keep the record straight, even as a brief footnote in History...

ah, that is an interesting comment.  I wasn't aware of Ben Fernandez. Will have to look him up.

As for Richardson's chances...my answer is ..."eh...we'll see". I think most of interest will be comparing the number of Hispanic supporters Richardson garners vs. those of other candidates.

I read an article not long ago talking about how Richardson had some work to do in proving his "hispanicness" with certain Hispanics. Esp. given his last name.

I m hispana but not a Richardson supporter at all.  What has he done?  I mean besides hold high profile positions.  I support Giuliani.  Look at everything he did in NYC after 9-11. He also helped Mexico improve their crime numbers. Plus Giuliani is also a nice guy- period.  I dont know that I've ever seen Richardson crack a smile.

I think the Richardson "effect" will be interesting.  Will he snatch up the Hispanic vote?  And will he just be niche focused?  If he does, to what point will his Hispanic voters follow him.  We all know he's not going to make it to the convention.  So when he finally withdraws from the race & endorses another candidate, will Hispanics flock to whoever he endorses?

I live in New Mexico, and for one, appreciate his work here for the state.  I plan on voting for Richardson.

I don't live in New Mexico, but will be supporting Richardson.  As mentioned in the article above, it's not often Hispanics get this far.  So thus-- he will get my support, as long as he's in the race.
