Posted: Oct 15 2014
Michael Dergar, Founder and CEO of the Academy of Special Dreams Foundation, has debuted his first children's e-book collection. The new e-book is titled ’A World of Inclusion’. Featuring real life examples of young people dealing with disabilities, A World of Inclusion features thirteen separate illustrated short stories of children and adults living with disabilities who participate in their own special way in many aspects of everyday life with family and friends. Through vignettes such as ’Walk with Me’ where Miguel must walk slowly and carefully yet he still can go everywhere. And ’Sports and Arts’ in which Tom uses the front wheels of his wheelchair to produce dozens of pieces of art and who also believes that sports are a great addition to his art. In ’ My Quince ñera’ , we learn about Alejandra for whom nothing will stop her from fulfilling her dream of dancing with her family, even though she’s in a wheelchair.
Dergar has been working for years to support those with disabilities in achieving their dreams, no matter the obstacle. Dergar envisions a world where children accept, adapt, embrace, and celebrate the abilities of their playmates and others in our community rather than dwell on limitations imposed by their disabilities. Dergar empasized that a ’world of inclusion is relevant’. It’s important because approximately 15% of Americans have special needs and/or a physical disability according to the World Health Organization.
For the past five years while working full-time in the Special Education field mainly with young adults who have varying disabilities, Mr. Dergar has sought to provide opportunities to individuals with disabilities to showcase their artitistic expressions to the world by by featuring these artists and their works of art on the Academy of Special Dreams Foundation website. Mr. Dergar's efforts to work with the special needs community have led to collaborating online with many organizations throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia helping community leaders to educate our newest generations of children about creating a more inclusive society where differences in abilities among family, friends, and playmates are accepted, embraced and celebrated, and any limitations imposed by disabilities are simply adapted into play, sports, and other activities.
