Naturalization Information

There are three ways people can become U.S. citizens:

  • By birth, within the United States territory, or to U.S. citizen parents
  • Naturalization
  • Any child (under the age of 18) who is adopted by a U.S citizen and immigrates to the U.S. also immediately becomes a U.S. citizen.

Naturalization grants U.S. citizenship to those of foreign birth.  Applicants must fulfill requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). General requirements posted by USCIS are:

  • a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S.
  • residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing
  • ability to read, write, & speak English
  • a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history & government
  • good moral character
  • attachment to principles of the U.S. Constitution
  • favorable disposition toward the U.S.

Required: All naturalization applicants must demonstrate good moral character, attachment, and favorable disposition.

Can be waived: Other naturalization requirements may be modified or waived for certain types of applicants, these include spouses of U.S. citizens etc.  Please review & carefully read the N-400 application instructions, along with checking the USCIS website before applying.

Naturalization Fees:

$595 Filing cost

$80   Biometrics fee

Note: Applicants over 75 years old do not submit the biometrics fee for a total cost of $595.  Military applicants filing under Section 328 & 329 are not charged a filing of biometrics fee.
