Hispanic.com: Makeup - Face

Foundation

Foundation is a key item of a Hispana’s wardrobe and is very individual to skintone.  It should perfectly match your skintone in all types of light, and not make you look like you are wearing a mask.  A good way to find the right foundation for you is to try out samples, or go by a make up counter and have them help you select the correct color.  However, the color that looks right in the store may not look right in regular light outside the store.  So don’t buy the foundation until you’ve given it a “test drive” and walked around in it for several hours.

Types of foundations include liquid, mousse, cream, stick, cream to powder, and tinted moisturizers/sunscreens.

Liquid Foundations- These are usually used on a daily basis and work great for a light coverage on your face.  Liquid foundations can be oil or water based.  What is right for you?  Well if you have oily skin, then you would go for a water based formula.  If you have generally normal skin, then an oil based formula would work.

Foundations come in pink, orange, and yellow color based formulas.  For Latinas it is important to be careful when choosing a foundation because we definitely should not be using the pink-color based formulas, as Latina skin has more of an olive, yellow undertone.  So be careful here, and choose the color with the right base.  Another thing to consider is if you are going for a matte or a shinier skin finish.

Cream Foundations-  These offer heavier coverage than liquid foundation, and are often what is used by professional makeup artists.  These are good for normal skin, and can be used to conceal skin discolorations due to their exceptional coverage.

Cream-to-Powder-  These types of foundations are great for Hispanas on the run.  Find one that exactly matches your skin tone, and you can put on your makeup in your sleep!  These types of foundations can work well for people with oily skin or in areas where there’s a lot of humidity.

Stick Foundations- Stick foundation is very similar to cream foundations, and offers the same coverage.  The advantage to stick foundations is that they can easily fit in your purse, though putting it on can be a bit challenging unless you also carry a makeup sponge.

Mousse-  Mousse foundations can be fun.  Although finding one in your exact color can be tricky.  However mousse foundations offer a very light, non shiny finish and make your skin look great!

Tinted Moisturizers/Sunscreens-  These offer very light coverage, the lightest of the bunch.  Tinted moisturizers/sunscreens are great for people who have good skin and just want to even out their skin tone.
